Chapter Thirty-Seven

~ Kalista ~

I slipped from Locanôke back to the bed with Beryx, but I didn’t open my eyes. I could feel the sun on my face as it streamed through the bay window to the left of my bed. It was so nice and warm here on his chest under the blanket. Beryx shifted, and his phone snapped closed before he pushed the curls from my face.

“Good morning, Nev’da. That was Tati. She was letting us know that your Makumae and Lilith are making breakfast, and if we want anything good, we should head down soon or Aiden and Max may eat it all,” he said, and I lifted my head to him before opening one eye, testing how bright it was. My curls fell to shade my face and he smiled, “O’Naroè, Ellesey50.”

“Naroè, Ellesak51,” I returned, and kissed him before I set my head to his shoulder again. “What time is it?”

“Nearly nine,” he confirmed, combing his hands gently through my curls. “Are you ready to see your family?”

“I don’t even wanna get outta bed,” I groaned, but my stomach growled. “It appears I’ve been outvoted. We should go to breakfast then see where the day takes us.”

“You’re right about that,” he said and placed a kiss to my forehead. I sat up and set my hands on his chest. “I regrettably have to head into town and do a bit of last-minute shopping. It is Christmas Eve after all.”

I tilted my head and thought about all the people I would normally get gifts for then about my last shopping trip. I groaned and laid back down. He chuckled and pushed my hair from my face again.

“I forgot you don’t like shopping,” he said, and I shook my head against his chest.

“Especially not in Los Angeles. All those people,” I moaned then shuddered. “From the haughty look of the shoppers to the judgmental workers.” I moaned against his shirt then sighed and lifted back up. “It’s even worse than a Council Meeting.”

He laughed, vibrating his chest, and blush burned my cheeks as it vibrated other things, since I was straddling his stomach. I cleared my throat and slid off him.

“Would you rather go to the Agency and take care of that interview?” he teased. I stopped at the edge of the bed and turned back to him.

“I don’t think I have a choice about that, and I’d rather just get it over with,” I said, and Beryx’s phone rang from the bedside table. I blinked at it, and he grabbed it before it went to voicemail.

“It’s your father,” he said, before he flipped it open. “Yes, Lou… Yes…” he said, and I tapped into my heightened senses so I could hear the other side of the conversation.

“The Council would prefer that interview happen sooner rather than later. Would you be able to take Kalista to the Agency to be interviewed and pick up her I.D.?” Packana asked, and Beryx looked at me. I nodded, and he slid to sit beside me.
